Although quiet during the day, at night Barrio Alto becomes the capitol of Lisbon nightlife. The graffiti on the façades leave Barrio Alto an interesting, colorful maze of streets, where travelers can find restaurants, touristy Fado houses, and an assortment of bars to choose from. Barrio Alto is also home to many stylish boutiques, most of which stay open late into the night.

The cobble stone streets of Lisbon’s Barrio Alto are packed almost every night of the week, with locals and tourists standing around outside drinking and enjoying the nightlife. There are many bars to choose from in the Barrio Alto, and since most often people drink in the street, it hardly matters which one you choose.

The main streets that run through Barrio Alto are Rua do Norte, Rua da Atalaia, and Rua do Diário de Noticias. If you are traveling to Lisbon, explore the Barrio Alto, but remember, in Lisbon, things start late. The later that it gets, the more people flock there. Enjoy the interesting atmosphere of the Barrio Alto, perhaps have dinner at one of the restaurants, but remember that Barrio Alto is touristy, so finding a good restaurant takes special attention.

Lisbon nightlife is especially available in the Barrio Alto, so if that is what you are looking for, head up there well into the night. Despite what you may hear, Barrio Alto is quite safe, however in the early hours of the morning, be careful, just like in any other city in the world. Barrio Alto is a unique quarter of Lisbon, so be sure to spend some time there.
